Telepresence Space Generation

Can we interact with people who are far away by breaking down components of physical space, such as walls, and experience their presence as if they are right beside us? Telepresence Space research aims to merge physical spaces with virtually synthesized spaces to enable people-to-people interaction through methods that have not previously existed in the physical world. Unlike traditional video conferencing or screen-based telepresence, our approach integrates both physical and virtual environments to create immersive spaces. This has wide applications in scenarios such as remote collaboration, education, and social experiences, where connecting people across locations seamlessly is crucial.

We have explored optimizing and merging multiple spaces based on their geometric and functional similarities, and dynamic visibility modification based on user movement. Additionally, we developed techniques to connect heterogeneous spaces in visually natural and seamless ways through synthesized transitional spaces. Our goal is to enable users to interact in merged environments naturally and intuitively. We aim to extend our methods to tackle ten+ spaces and users by intelligently merging physical spaces based on their purposes for gathering.
